Taking Care of Your Afghan Hound's Appearance

Afghan Hounds in appearance are graceful animals, with an aristocratic look and has remained to be seen as very exotic coming from their history. If you plan on showing your Afghan Hound in dog shows than appearance is even more important, even if you choose not to show your Afghan Hound you should make sure their appearance is within the proper guidelines.

The head of the Afghan Hound has a slight prominence of a nasal bone structure, which gives them a Roman like look to them. Their skull should be evenly balanced with their foreface.

The Afghan Hounds jaws should match evenly, not overshot or undershot. This can be difficult to breed into the Afghan Hounds at times. The scissor bite is where the lower teeth slip inside the upper jaw, this is more easily bred into the dogs. This should not be penalized against the dogs though.

The Ears of Afghan Hounds should be long and set at the outer corners of their eyes. The end of the ear should be able to touch the end of the dog's nose. The eyes of an Afghan Hound should be almond shaped and should be dark in colour. Afghan Hounds eyes should never be full or bulgy. The neck of the Afghan Hound should be a good length, and the neck should be strong and arched in shape. At no time should the neck be too short or too thick.

The body of the Afghan Hound should be level from the shoulders to the loin. The loin should be strong and powerful with a slight arch. Their Hipbones should also be pronounced as well. The height of the shoulders should be equal to the distance from the chest to the buttocks. Make sure to be aware of a Roach back, swayback, goose rump, slack loin; lack of prominence of hipbones, this could cause your Afghan not to be a show dog.
