Afghan Hound Dog Show Information

Many Afghan Hound owners are interested or partake in dog shows and if this is something that interests you, you may want to know the basics for when you go to a dog show. Here is a quick bit of information for you to consider when attending a dog show.

When you are showing your dog, you are trying to earn points in which to collect. It will take 15 points along with two major wins in which to have your Afghan Hound seen as a “Champion of Record”. Judges are only able to give up to 5 points each, and this is for a spectacular dog.

There are also seven groups in which to show dogs and of course your Afghan Hound will be classified in the hound group. Other dogs in which Afghans Hounds may compete against include Greyhounds, Basset Hounds, and Beagles. Other groups include sporting, working, terrier, toy, non-sporting, and herding.

Ribbons are what you will want to collect for your Afghan Hounds as ribbons are presented to dogs via the judges. Each colour will indicate the type of show that they have won.

The blue ribbon is awarded to the winner for first place in any regular class., or it may also be awarded for the winner of each group competition, usually in the form of a "rosette". A red ribbon is awarded for second place in each class, and also may be awarded for second place in each group competition, usually in the form of a "rosette" once again. The yellow ribbon is awarded for third place in each class, or third in a group. White Ribbons is awarded for fourth place in each class or group.

Purple Ribbons are awarded for the winners of the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch classes, these are the classes in which championship points are earned, these ribbons are highly coveted. Purple and White Ribbons are awarded to the Reserve Winners who are the runners-up to the winner of the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch classes.

Blue and White Ribbons are awarded to the dog that wins Best of Winners, this is better than Winners Dog and Winners Bitch winners. Purple and Gold are awarded for the dog judged "Best of Breed" in each breed competition with this ribbon you will be able to advance to the Group competition.

Red and White shows the best of opposite sex, which means the best dog of the breed that is the opposite sex of the Best of Breed winner, and the Red, White, and Blue Ribbon is the only one that is awarded at the end of each show and is only given to the ultimate award winner, the best in show.

This is just a base of what you may want to know about the world of dog shows, if you plan to show your Afghan Hound or Afghan puppies, make sure to contact your local kennel for more information.
