Afghan Hounds are regal dogs and need to have a very well balanced diet. When you first receive your Afghan Hound puppy, make
sure to ask the breeder what food you should feed to the puppy and make sure it is excellent quality. If you choose to change
your Afghan hound puppy's food, make sure to do it over a 2 week period, by slowly adding the new food to the old brand until
there is no more of the old brand. This will allow you to control the affects of diarrhea, stools as well as a few other problems
that can arise.
A young Afghan hound puppy take refuse in that which is normal to them, if you are traveling with your puppy or dog, make
sure to bring the same water and food that they get from home.
Your Afghan puppy will require feeding 3 to 4 times a day, as they mature you will reduce the feeding to one to two meals
a day. You should build this schedule around your own, but try to provide at least 4 to 5 hours between the meals for your
puppy. One cup of dry food to ¼ of moist food mixed together should be a great starter for your puppy.
After that you may want to try dog biscuits, carrots, and some pabulum. When purchasing the pabulum try to stay with rice
formula, it seems to be the best for this breed. When your Afghan hound reaches about a year and a half you will want to look
at changing their dog food over to what is required for an adult dog.
As they continue to grow the amount of protein and fat is not needed as much to help with their growth. At this time you
will also decrease the daily feeding to one to tow times a day. It will depend on your dog whether you will have to feed them
at a certain time or allow them to have a free choice. Some dogs will finish everything in their bowl as soon as it is set
down, and others will pick at their food until it is gone. Just like children, this will depend on your Afghan Hound personality.
With an Afghan Hound puppy you will want to keep them round, but not overweight, this could cause more problems over the
years. Remember that as cute as they are, human food could possible shorten their lifespan so it is never a good idea to start
or do it at all. These are some basic guidelines that will allow you to develop a feeding program that is best for you and
your Afghan Hound.
