For the Afghan Fraternity, those, who decide to listen, read and watch, you may heed or leave the information below.
Having worked along side the vetinary minds, investigating genetic and health isuues regarding ALL breeds, you would be amazed
at the amount of information that is either ignored or that we are ignorant of. Sylvia Evans is one of our few Afghan stollworts
who has such an interest in the genetic and health issues of our beloved breed that she is un afraid to state the obvious
or give information when requested. Having spoken and been involved with investigations over the water and in the UK I hope
that all reputable breeders and lovers of our hound will be open minded enough, opposed to blinkered, to watch and heed. This
is after all the breeds healthy future. This is not an opinion, it is sadly a medical / vetinary fact.
Before you purchase your Afghan Hound or Afghan Hound Puppy you may want to check with the breeder about certain health
issues. Afghan Hounds are normally very healthy animals, but it is always best to check the genetic history of your Afghan
Hound..
When choosing your Afghan Hound Puppy you should make sure that your breeder has checked for a few afflictions
that may harm your puppy in the future. Most breeders of Afghan Hounds will have the two breeding parent dogs tested as well
as having their blood line tested and checked out as well.
The Afghan Hounds parents should be tested for the following
diseases before the purchase of your Afghan Hound Puppy; Cardiac Evaluation, CERF Screening (Canine Eye Research Foundation),
Hip Dysplasia, and Shoulder OCD. A good breeder will be willing to show these papers at any times and without hesitation.
Checking for these health issues could result in you and your Afghan Hound having a longer and happier time together.
Other
health concerns that have afflicted Afghan Hounds includes; Afghan Hound Myelopathy, Anesthetic Idiosyncrasy, Cataract, Cherry
Eye (Eversion of nictitating membrane), Corneal dystrophy, Detached Retina, Glaucoma, Hemivertebra, Hemophilia A - Classic
Hemophilia, Narcolepsy, Osteochondritis Dissecans, Osteochondrosis, Pemphigus, Persistent Pupillary Membrane, Progressive
Retinal Atrophy, Retinal Dysplasia and von Willebrands Disease. These are not always tested for or required to be tested for
in the breeding groups, but as a concerned dog owner you should always make sure you are aware of these type of conditions.
Afghan Hounds are usually very healthy dogs for the most part, but they can be diagnosed with some health conditions
as well. Make sure before you purchase your Afghan Hound that you do all of your homework and make sure you get receipts of
all shots that have been administered to your Afghan Hound.
