Historical Information on Afghan Hounds

The breed of Afghan Hounds can be dated back quite a few thousand years and some believe to have dated Afghan Hounds as far back as the pre-Christian era. Some believe the history started in ancient Egypt, and at this time researchers have also dated their DNA back to other breeds of dogs. Afghan Hounds are seen as one of the most ancient dog breeds in the world.

Afghan Hounds get their name by its original home, which is believed to be in Afghanistan. Although there is some debate that Afghan Hounds may have actually originated from Russia, some researchers believe that Afghan Hounds are very similar to the Tasy Breed. Originally Afghan Hounds were not to be sold or given to anyone from outside of Afghanistan, because they were the national dog to the area and considered very sacred. The Afghan hound breed wasn't released to the rest of the world until the beginning of the 20th century.

Afghan Hounds were originally seen as guard dogs and herding dogs and it was later found that their skills were better used for hunting. The popularity of hunting increased the breeding of these beautiful hounds and the Afghan Hound was used to hunt wild game, such as antelope, gazelle and snow leopard.

It was believed that ancient Middle Eastern nomads used the Afghan Hounds as a coursing dog that was allowed to pursue game freely and without directions or interruptions from anyone including their owner.

The Afghan Hounds ability to go great distances and travel over adverse terrains while chasing game by sight made them popular throughout the years. They were considered a very reliable breed for hunting in harsh conditions.

Even though the breed itself was not recognized by the AKC and CKC until the 1930's, and you can see they have a very long history. These are ancient dogs that possess a beauty that not many breeds have and are very popular in the UK.
