Afghan Hounds have been said to have a temperament which can be aloof, alert, and very active. This is an active dog, which
in turn needs an active owner that will have the space to let them run. If you are thinking of taking in an Afghan Hound dog
or puppy, you will have to keep this in mind, they are not the type of dog to lie at your feet and follow you around.
Afghan Hounds are well known to have a very independent type of personality and may also be very shy to strangers or unfamiliar
dogs. They can also be very vocal dogs when they need to be, and can be seen as a great intimidator when agitated. Afghan
Hounds were originally bred for hunting, and they will need the space to run because of the way they were raised.
Hunting is still a strong skill for these animals as well and are known to be most active in mornings as well as the evenings.
If you are planning to get an Afghan Hound be prepared to walk a good mile or so in the morning and evening. It is also important
to have a large yard for them to roam in as they are a large breed and require space.
Afghan Hounds may seem daft but they are very smart and independent which will be easily displayed when you try to train
these gorgeous animals. It won’t take long for your Afghan Hound to learn basic commands such as sit, and lie down,
but they are not retrievers, so if you plan to use advanced commands you will need to have obedience training as well as a
healthy load of patience.
As with most breeds of dogs if you plan to get an Afghan Hound you will need to invest a lot of time and money to ensure
your dog grows healthy and happy. So if you have the time and patience you will almost immediately have a new best friend
waiting for you at the door.
