Training Your Afghan Hound

To take care of an Afghan Hound and or Afghan puppy, you will need a strong will and a lot of patience. They must be brushed from a young age, and this is can not be stressed enough. They also need a tremendous amount of exercise on a daily basis, this is also a requirement for having a gorgeous Afghan Hound as a pet.

As soon as you have your Afghan puppy you should start to brush them on a daily basis, this is something that both of you will have to get use to for ten or more years. At about the age of 10 to 18 months the Afghan puppies will lose their puppy coat, and start to develop their adult coat. At this time you will have to brush the dog on a daily basis to make sure you get the puppy coat out without tangling the new growth of the adult coat.

During this time you will have to have your Afghan Hound stand still for periods of time while you examine their coats, and brush out the tangles before they start. If this is not done you may end up having to cut out large pieces of their coat, to get the mats out, or they may also get skin irritations. Once again, it is best to train your Afghan puppy to get used to being brushed and combed on a daily basis.

Exercise is a must for Afghan Hounds, puppies and of course you. It is highly recommended that you walk your Afghan Hound and or Afghan puppy at least a mile every single day. To be able to do this and enjoy the experience of walking your Afghan puppy you will have to leash train and once again this is a daily thing The younger you start the better.

This is where you will need a lot of patience and time, Afghan Hounds and Afghan puppies, can be shy and sensitive to harsh correction. This means you cannot lose your patience and yell and scream at the Afghan Hounds, you must gently correct them over and over again until they are trained. You must be very firm with leash training, but not cross over to mean or harsh, this will take time and patience from both you and your Afghan Hound.

Obedience classes are a must; this will cement your connection and training with your Afghan puppy for a life time. This will help in all aspects of training, but the most important note to take away when training your Afghan Hound is patience and gentle guidance. Happy training to you and your Afghan hound or puppy!
